WHY YOU SHOULD LET THE KIDS GO OUTSIDE THIS WINTER
Home › Why You Should Let the Kids Go Outside This Winter
Winter is an excellent excuse to stay lazy and stay indoors. You’re probably tempted to keep your children away from the snow, inside the cozy warm house, and away from essential activity. Most parents think that staying inactive for a few winter months doesn’t really matter. After all, your children will still go to school, still play inside the house, and still get some amount of exercise. At CERALand, we believe that is essential for child to spend a small portion of the day playing outside, even during winter months. Here are some reasons why:
Exposure to the Sun and Vitamin D
Even the pale winter sun will provide ample amounts of essential vitamin D. Most children and adults won’t get enough of this essential nutrient just from food. The daily recommended dose is anywhere between 200UI to 2000UI. Being exposed to sunlight is the best way to get it. Being outdoors in the sun will also help your children warm up and become active. That’s essential during the winter months, which can become very dull for the children. You can encourage games such as snowball fight, tag, or even building a snowman.
Staying Healthy and Fit
It’s always a better idea to be continuously active, regardless of the time of the year. If you give in to lethargy, it’s more difficult to get back to your former level of activity. This should be encouraged in kids. There are some parents who believe that being out in the cold would make their children sick, but that’s not true. While they might develop a runny nose, that’s just their body excreting bacteria during the cold Indiana conditions.
The only way children are likely to develop a cold is if they come in contact with a person who’s suffering from the ailment. So, being outside during the winter wouldn’t harm your children’s heath if they’re properly attired and ready for the cold.
Getting outside is also the best way to beat the winter blues and promote overall wellness. Children won’t get bored and will stay happy and enthusiastic if they’re allowed to play outside for a reasonable amount of time during the winter.
